A judge ordered a 42-year-old man to be held without bond Sunday after he was accused of severely abusing his 6-year-old stepchild.

Zachary Perez is facing a charge of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm. During Sunday's hearing, a judge said Perez allegedly placed a dog collar around the child's neck, pulled the child to the ground, kicked them in the stomach, and struck them with a tree branch.

Perez will remain in custody until he appears before another judge on Monday, May 12. If he is granted bond at that hearing, the judge ruled he may return to the home only once within 48 hours to retrieve personal belongings — but he must stay at least 500 feet away from the victim and have no contact with the child.

The case remains under investigation.
