COPA investigating after suspect killed in shootout with Chicago police in Hammond, Indiana
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating a deadly shooting by police officers after a chase that ended across the state line in Hammond, Indiana, on Thursday evening.
Chicago police said just before 6 p.m., officers responded to the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue for a person wanted for an aggravated battery.
Upon arrival, officers saw the person enter a vehicle and leave the scene before crashing near Dearborn Avenue and Gostlin Street in Hammond, about two blocks east of the Illinois-Indiana state line.
Officers arrived at the scene of the crash, where they were fired upon. They returned fire, hitting the suspect, police said.
The suspect was taken to St. Catherine Hospital, where he died.
Both officers were taken to a nearby hospital for observation and were in good condition.
No other injuries were reported. A firearm was recovered on the scene.
COPA is investigating the specifics of the incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.
The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
