Shootout between drivers ends with car crashing into building on Chicago's Northwest Side
A shootout between two drivers ended with a car crashing into an apartment building Tuesday night along the border between Chicago and neighboring Elmwood Park, and police are on the lookout for a driver who started shooting at a concealed carry holster from his car.
Chicago police said a 23-year-old man was driving east on the 7700 block of West Belmont Avenue around 9:45 p.m., when he was involved in a "road incident" with another driver.
The driver of the second car pulled out a gun and started shooting. The first driver, who has a concealed carry license, returned fire.
The second driver's car crashed into an apartment building, and that driver ran off. No one was injured in the shootout or crash.
Neighbors said police recently installed a new pod camera which should have caught the shooting and subsequent crash. The shooter's car smashed through the windows of a woman's garden apartment.
Iwona Kitanov has lived in the same building for 20 years. Her neighbor was luckily out of town at the time of the crash.
"They drive through the window, so the wall is broken and window is broken, and inside the apartment is also damaged," Kitanov said.
Miriam David just moved to the same block six months ago.
"Me and my husband were just watching a movie. We heard seven gunshots continuously," she said. "Right after that, we heard a car screech off. We saw a van fly off."
That van ended up at a nearby White Castle, where he concealed carry holder involved in the shootout pulled over and waited for police to arrive.
Meantime, tenants of the building where the car crashed were waiting for an assessment of the total cost of the damage.
Both Chicago and Elmwood Park police responded to this crime and were investigating. No one was in custody Wednesday afternoon.
